Life Lessons from the Bamboo Tree
We can learn about our world and life’s lessons through nature in many ways. The bamboo tree is a beautiful example of life’s most important lessons. When we understand how the bamboo tree grows, we can relate this to our personal growth, faith, perseverance, patience and determination. A seed is planted in the ground and must be tendered by regularly getting enough water and sunshine. Standard stuff when it comes to growing a plant right? The difference between many plants and a bamboo tree is that you don’t see any growth for quite some time, and you won’t see any evidence of growth for four years!
In the fifth year, the seed sprouts through the earth and grows exponentially. How much does it grow and how quickly? Eighty feet in six weeks! So, the question is -was the bamboo tree dormant for four years beneath the ground? Did all the growth occur once it finally broke through the earth? It may appear so, as the growth is phenomenal in such a short time frame. Just how much growth is happening beneath the surface? I would say that the most crucial growth occurred in four years when nothing was visible. Strong foundations take time to build and are fundamental to supporting the tree's mighty growth and sheer size.
When we are passionate about something or have a dream or goal, we must have patience, belief, and perseverance. We must act and nurture the seed we have planted, even though it seems nothing is happening. We must have eyes that see the invisible and beyond the surface to see the outcome. How often have you just about given up on something when suddenly a breakthrough occurs? What have you learned about yourself through the times when it seems that nothing is happening? Perhaps you’ve needed to experience giving up on yourself. What did you learn about yourself through giving up? We can always begin again. We have limitless potential! Rather than being critical of yourself for giving up, explore what went on during that time and see what learning you can extract from that experience and build on it.
We live in a fast-paced world that encourages us to expect quick results, and much of society has grown in impatience and intolerance. Yes, you can stamp your feet and possibly get your way quickly. You can have that bright, shiny toy now and pay for it later. In most cases, that high or instant gratification is short-lived, and the recipient may quickly feel empty and bored. The opposite is far more long-term and satisfying as the path to growth is inspiring and fulfilling and builds character, essential to reaching our goals and setting new ones.
So, keep nurturing your seed nestled beneath the surface, and have faith that essential growth is taking place and the breakthrough will come. Seeing is not believing; rather, the reverse is true. Keep believing, and you will see.
